Fort Pickens
Named for US Congress Andrew Pickens, this pentagonal fort on the western edge of Santa Rosa Island. After the war with Britain in 1812, the United States built the fort to guard the gateway to Pensacola Port. Apache leader Geronimo was once imprisoned in the fort. It has not been used for military purposes since 1947 and stands as a reminder of more militant times.
