The Ridges
Athens' top-rated attraction, The Ridges is an erstwhile Lunatic Asylum that once housed everyone from war veterans to alcoholics, criminals and even children, many of whom were buried in the cemetery on the grounds. The architecture by Levi T. Scofield is stunning.
Southeast Ohio History Center
Follow up your visit to The Ridges with one to this intriguing center which has detailed accounts about the asylum and its inmates. Other key pieces include Civil War time quilts, nursing uniforms and a painting by patient Billy Milligan.
Ohio University
History buffs should consider a guided visit to the beautiful Ohio University Campus. Look out for the arresting Soldiers and Sailors Monument that guards the entrance – it pays homage to townsfolks who died in the Civil War. There are many house rentals in the vicinity.
Kennedy Museum of Art
Besides a tidy collection of Southwest Native American artifacts, the museum, which is located in The Ridges, also hosts thought-provoking and diverse artistic encounters.
Stroud Run State Park
Ensconced in the bucolic Appalachian Plateau, this family-friendly park has tons of beaches and lakes where you can scuba dive, boat, or even enjoy bird-watching. It's a good idea to book a house rental nearby.
